Electric Car Sharing – a Solution for Urban Transport

Car Sharing is a new concept for the urban transport in the Eastern Europe and Romania is the first country that is going to integrate it.
Integration of electric cars in the car sharing system may be a real solution to convince the individual users of the advantages of electric cars. They can drive and utilize the car without being its owners, and so they can see the advantages of driving a silent car, which offers practically the same opportunities as a combustion car for the urban transport, is easy to drive and cheap to feed.
Car Sharing is a specific, decentralized car-rental system giving access, at any time, to the car. The access is controlled by modern electronic systems. Car Sharing is also a pay-as-you-drive system, encouraging people to think more carefully about their choice of modes and alternatives.
Technical characteristics of the propulsion system:

  • D.C. rare-earth permanent magnet motor, with a continuous power of10 kW and maximum speed of 2000 rpm
  • Supply voltage: 180 V DC (15 VRLA 12V/55Ah lead-acid batteries)
  • PWM / IGBT transistors electronic drive unit
Electric Car Sharing Application

Another project is an electric vehicle designed to be utilized in the Car-Sharing system in Bucharest. These are the vehicle photos during the demonstration meeting at the workshop “EV-2003”, held in Pitesti, Romania. Car Sharing is a new concept for the urban transport in the Central and Eastern Europe and Romania is the first country that is going to integrate it.
This prototype has been made by providing a vehicle from the current production in Romania with electric propulsion. Its engine was replaced by an electric propulsion system: a DC motor, power converter and batteries. The prototype kept the main transmission. In order to be able to evaluate the dynamic behavior the prototype also kept the gearbox and the clutch. The present solution has been chosen according to some restrictions, including the financial ones, and  it is under evaluation. The maximum speed of 60 km/h is not a discomfort for the urban transport and the autonomy  allows the user to cover an usual route in the city during a day.

The tests have been carried out for two months on private roads. The experimental results show the following performances:

  • top speed: 60 km/h ( with  300 kg payload)
  • range: 60 km
